I recently tried to suspend my system. There seems to be a problem with unsuspending, so I hard-resetted my system. After the reboot the nm- applet started even tough I never use it and therefore disabled in AutoStart-Programs. In this state, all programs assumed offline-mode (firefox, pidgin, ...). After a while I started nm-applet manually and clicked on "enable network". This solved my problem permanently. (I won't try suspend anymore as Ubuntu seems unable to reset the disconnected-state itself)
