Thank you for taking the time to report this issue and help to improve
Ubuntu.

The error in the log is:

Updating /boot/grub/menu.lst ... /usr/sbin/update-grub: line 1516:
/boot/grub/menu.lst: Operation not supported
User postinst hook script [/sbin/update-grub] exited with value 1
dpkg: error processing linux-image-2.6.31-21-generic (--configure):
subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1

Line 1516 of this script reads:

    cat $menu.new > $menu

There's no reason that should be an unsupported operation. Please show
the output of the 'mount' command and attach a copy of /etc/fstab.
