This appears to be the correct fix to me (swapping ld with gcc and
losing -E).  The resulting .so file doesn't lose any symbols due to the
lack of -E.  (I checked with both builds, and with add -Wl,-E to the gcc
invocation.)  So, this appears to be safe.
