Running Lucid and Jaunty while network down.

Tried to use distro DVD to add packages.  Synaptic reported that it could not 
find the drive etc.
I used a shell and found /dev/cdrom, /dev/cdrw, /dev/dvd and /dev/dvdrw.  I 
could use 'ls'  to view
the contents of the media.  I could use 'eject XXXX' to spit the media drawer 
out.  The desktop
file manager saw the media as mounted.  I could unmount and remount from the 
desktop.
Synaptic did not see the package DVD whether the media was mounted or unmounted.

I know that the original post was much older, but this problem persists
... at least for me.
