Sorry, my fault!
In the file /etc/grub.d/00_header I had line 42 and 43 uncommented for an 
earlier attempt to fix the screen resolution on startup, that's why I couldn't 
update-grub:

40  if [ "x${GRUB_GFXPAYLOAD}" = "x" ] ; then GRUB_GFXPAYLOAD=1024x768x32 ; fi

I commented the two lines and now I can update-grub, I did the startup loading 
the new kernel, installed new packages with Synaptic without error response.
