A few things:

Is this a fresh install of Ubuntu lucid, or is it an upgrade?
Is this a notebook or a desktop machine, if its a desktop, is your microphone
connected at the front or rear of the machine?

As to your speakers not working, I suggest you check the volume in the
volume control applet, located in the top right hand corner of your
screen. I suggest moving the control down and up a bit while playing
some audio, and listening to see if you hear anything. Also make sure
the volume control on the speakers is turned up.

As for the microphone, I suggest you click on the volume control icon
once again, and go into the preferences. You will find options there to
adjust the volume and preferred microphone device you want to use.
Please try adjusting these and recording some audio.

Thanks
