Public bug reported:

10.04 LTS (lucid) is currently packaged with SANE as a back-end for
Simple Scan. Currently, libusb 0.1-4 comes delivered with lucid, with
no available upgrades >=0.1-4 in the existing repositories through
synaptic. Problem is, according to the SANE man pages (man sane-usb)
"SANE can only use libusb 0.1.6 or newer. It needs to be installed at
build-time."

Note that I may be reading the package nomenclature wrong (i.e. - does
the dashed number "0.1-4" in the deb package directly translate to
version "0.1.4" of libusb?). Nonetheless, my scanner (Canon DR2580c)
-- which is well supported by SANE -- didn't work with Simple Scan (or
SANE) on lucid, and I had to do a considerable amount of reconfiguring,
compiling, and installation to get the latest libusb installed on my
system. Note that 0.1-4 can't simply be removed in synaptic package
manager because the number of dependencies on libusb is too great, and
the inexperienced user will likely lose critical operations if they
attempt to fix the issue this way.

An incredibly simple fix to this issue would just be to add libusb 0.1.6
or newer to the Ubuntu repositories so that this issue can be fixed by
installing a package that is newer than 0.1-4 using synaptic.

** Affects: sane-backends (Ubuntu)
     Importance: Undecided
         Status: New
