The original poster forgot to add that gnome is losing your monitor
preferences as well. You can use the monitor switch mode on your laptop
but you cannot get it to bring up the desktop monitor. Or it will bring
it up as the secondary instead of showing the same image on both.
Finally if you switch enough it will show the same image but as soon as
you close the laptop lid it will shutdown the second monitor. During
presentations if your display sleeps or you suspend laptop during a
break it is a fiasco getting it back online.

Quick FIX: Just go into monitor preferences while the monitor is
connected and then choose "same image" for both monitors and it will fix
it.
