I have now retested and I believe the problem was caused by the FF
Plugin DownThemAll, versions prior to 1.1.10. I installed 1.1.10
(released after this bug report was filed), and FF is working fine with
it.
Whether or not Firefox should have handled the dodgy plugin more
gracefully, is an issue for Firefox and not Ubuntu, therefore I am
marking this bug as Invalid.
