I've discovered another work around:
Quite Kopete, then open up ~/.kde/share/config/kopeterc and delete all
the settings under the "[chatwindow_{blahblahblah}]" sections,
especially the bits about TextBgColor, then restart kopete, and all the
chat windows will be back to normal.
