I am running the mainline kernel 2.6.34-020634-generic on Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx (with all latest updates applied) and the wireless N adapter described above does not work automatically. I got the same messages in the dmesg output as the OP shows.
I copied the firmware off the CD that came with the adapter and it works.
