Very peculiar.
I managed to get my hands on a second machine with the same graphics
card, and it works fine (using the exact same monitor). Here's the
card's section of lspci on the second machine:
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 82G33/G31 Express
Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 02)
Subsystem: Dell Device 0238
Control: I/O+ Mem+ BusMaster+ SpecCycle- MemWINV- VGASnoop- ParErr-
Stepping- SERR- FastB2B- DisINTx+
Status: Cap+ 66MHz- UDF- FastB2B+ ParErr- DEVSEL=fast >TAbort- <TAbort-
<MAbort- >SERR- <PERR- INTx-
Latency: 0
Interrupt: pin A routed to IRQ 26
Region 0: Memory at fdf00000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=512K]
Region 1: I/O ports at ff00 [size=8]
Region 2: Memory at d0000000 (32-bit, prefetchable) [size=256M]
Region 3: Memory at fdb00000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=1M]
Capabilities: <access denied>
Kernel driver in use: i915
Kernel modules: i915
Also, Fedora 13 (using Xorg 1.8) works fine on both. When I have some
time I'll see if using 1.8 from the xorg-edgers ppa fixes it on the
other machine.
