I have the same problem with an Acer Extensa 5220, on Ubuntu 10.04
Plugging-in an external stick :
"~$ dmesg
....
[ 248.916064] usb 2-1: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 2
[ 249.051384] usb 2-1: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice"
So, the external drive is recognized, but nothing were mounted.
Sometimes work the following commands (but not always):
"sudo stop udev
sudo start udev"
and reinstalling udev does not solve the problem.
As suggested by Jeremy Foshee, I'm going to mark as new this bug.
