Adding another report to this one, since we're nearly halfway to the
next release and this bug is seemingly unassigned still. I know that
development is done on a hugely voluntary basis, but if Ubuntu is to
"just work" and gain mass acceptance, particularly with the targets for
best-in-class boot speed...

Acer Aspire Revo, same boot symptoms, no ACPI override works, no
apparent problems beyond the slow boot.
