Mathieu, I have the same error. The nm-applet doesn't appear in the
Notification Area.
I removed the Notification Area and added it before but it doesn't work.

nm-applet is running with --sm-disable.
$ ps -fax|grep nm-applet
 1967 ?        S      0:00 nm-applet --sm-disable

$tail -f ~/.xsession-errors
** Message: secret service operation failed: Did not receive a reply. Possible
causes include: the remote application did not send a reply, the message bus
security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout expired, or the network
connection was broken.
** Message: secret service operation failed: Activation of
org.freedesktop.secrets timed out

My network-manager-gnome is 0.8-0ubuntu3
