This is already possible.
1. Install the simple compiz settings manager from the Ubuntu Software Center.
2. Start it by going to System -> preferences -> Simple CompizConfig Settings
Manager
3. Go to the 'Edges' tab.
4. Click on one of the edges, and then click on 'General Options: Show Desktop'
