Very sadly, this issue continues with 10.04 on an X300. I have tried upgrading to alsa 1.0.23, tried almost every setting in /etc/modprobe.d /alsa-base.conf , and played tons with pulse and alsamixer.
As it stands now, clearly the alsa device works when pulseaudio is bypassed. However, for some reason pulse doesn't pick it up.
