I was having an extreme graphics regression bug with Ubuntu Lucid, every
program I opened I encountered GUI problems, and this was with Compiz
turned off. I solved my problem by upgrading to kernel 2.6.34 by the
advice of Stenten and all my problems went away and Ubuntu Lucid ran
beautifully. This proves to me that it was not part of a quadrapassel
bug or VLC bug, something in the newer kernel completely fixes the
problems I was having. I have rigorously been testing Ubuntu Lucid for
about a month now with the new kernel and can confirm I no longer can
find one graphics issue and the distro runs incredibly stable.

For the easiest instructions as to how to upgrade to the new kernel you
can do this in terminal by:

downloading the packages: wget -c http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-
ppa/mainline/v2.6.34-lucid/linux-
headers-2.6.34-020634-generic_2.6.34-020634_i386.deb
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v2.6.34-lucid/linux-
headers-2.6.34-020634_2.6.34-020634_all.deb http://kernel.ubuntu.com
/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v2.6.34-lucid/linux-
image-2.6.34-020634-generic_2.6.34-020634_i386.deb

install the packages: sudo dpkg -i linux-
headers-2.6.34-020634-generic_2.6.34-020634_i386.deb linux-
headers-2.6.34-020634_2.6.34-020634_all.deb linux-

I would like to thank everyone for their help and I am so happy that
Lucid is now working the way it should!
