I stand corrected, it does seem to be a problem with genisoimage.

I took an image I created on Linux to windows,  I could mount the image
as a virtual disc just like I could loopback on Linux, however when I
burned the .iso it junked another DVD.

So I created an .iso using nero, and burned it fine using k3b. So it
seems genisoimage is making iso's that are no good.
