You should use an alias to add the option rather than setting
GREP_OPTIONS. The alias will only be evaluated during interactive
commands, so it will not mess up scripts. Ubuntu adds --color=auto to
ls and grep by default with aliases for this reason. If you wish to add
-n, you should change the alias defined in your .bashrc.
