Public bug reported:

I was originally running 64-bit Kubuntu Lucid, and chose the "sleep"
option from the exit menu. The screen went blank and no action
involving the keyboard, mouse, or power button would bring the screen
alive again. After a hard reset, the computer came up okay except that
the computer had no ethernet communication. 'ifconfig' shows the
ethernet as having no IP address, as if DHCP was not working. The
network manager shows that there are no networks available at all. I
tried adding a "New Wired Connection" but nothing changed.

I keep a small partition available with Xubuntu as a backup. With this
alternate operating system the ethernet works fine, and I used this
system to submit this bug, which may lead to misleading information from
the 'ubuntu-bug' automatic system.
