I did a regular update, in which ONE OF THE PACKAGES could not be downloaded
(opera browser).
All the other packages were installed successfully.

After this I get the following message from Synaptic and from apt-get:
Could not initialize the package information
An unresolvable problem occurred while initializing the package information.
Please report this bug against the 'update-manager' package and include the
following error message:
'E:Read error - read (5: Input/output error), E:The package lists or status
file could not be parsed or opened.'
"sudo apt-cache clean" gave:
E: Read error - read (5: Input/output error)

** Attachment added: "/var/log/apt/term.log"
   http://launchpadlibrarian.net/50943084/var_log_apt_term.log

** Changed in: update-manager (Ubuntu)
       Status: Invalid => Confirmed
