@Jeremy Kerr
         There is a big issue with linux-backports-modules-alsa-lucid-generic
in proposed. It breaks thinkpad-acpi. This is what we were discussing earlier.
This testing was done on a T410. What this means:

         Any Thinkpad user cannot use linux-backports-modules-alsa-
lucid-generic or they will loose a lot of functionality from their
system. Thinkpad acpi is a critical part of the thinkpad experience

        Only ways to solve this:

      1) Updates go into kernel source
      2) dkms package just updating intel-hda driver (and not alsa .. as the
one I have attached to this bug).
      3) Turn off ALSA support in thinkpad-acpi in kernel.
          * It has no use on Lenovo Thinkpads .. and doesn't actually add any
function (yet) for IBM based Thinkpads.

       I've attached the dmesg for when you install
linux-backports-modules-alsa-lucid-generic from proposed. Look up thinkpad-acpi
you will see it's looking for symbols from alsa that are no longer in the same
place or there when you update to
linux-backports-modules-alsa-lucid-generic.
