No, the kernel ACPI is the lowest-level way of querying the BIOS that I
know of.
I am assuming this is a kernel issue (because it's gotta work right in
Windows... maybe Sony loads a proprietary driver or something?), but
just to confirm I sent a message to the upower mailing list a while
back. Haven't heard back yet, though, I'll post here when I do.
