In my case it looks like a Maverick linux kernel issue! Cups-pdf 2.5.0-15 (incl fix) and 2.5.0-15 both work with kernels up to version 2.6.35-5.6. However, when booting current kernel 2.6.35-6.8 cups-pdf no longer works.
