This line is broken, probably by incorrect manual editing of that file:
GRUB_DISTRIBUTOR=`lsb_release -i -s 2> /dev/null || echo
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash"
You'll need to fix that yourself, probably to:
GRUB_DISTRIBUTOR=`lsb_release -i -s 2> /dev/null || echo Debian`
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash"
The fact that the upgrade crashed rather than warning you and giving you
the opportunity to fix it is bug 484499.
