I just attempted in ubuntu 10.04 the procedure which worked in 9.04 ...
and it did not work.

apt-get install xserver-xorg-input-evtouch:
- does NOT create the file 50-touchkit.fdi in 
/usr/share/hal/fdi/policy/20thirdparty
- does NOT install calibrate_touchscreen
- when 50-touchkit.fdi is copied to here from working ubuntu 9.04 installation, 
the touchscreen changes behavior (pointer stays in bottom right corner)

It is my opinion that changes were made between 9.04 and 10.04 that
simply omitted some of what is required for the driver to behave the
same as it had in previous installations.
