Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: synaptic

Immediately when selecting a package it seg faults. Did a strace which
is attached. At the end of the trace I copied the contents of the  I
suspect is causing the problem.

Awkward workaround:

renamed file /var/lib/apt/lists/archive.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_lucid_Release to
                  
/var/lib/apt/lists/archive.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_lucid_Release.hold

and it works o.k.
