Hmm, the lockups started happening even in a <2k resolution virtual screen setup. Next step was disabling the "AGPMode" "2" directive - that worked.
This is consistent with the fact that the AGP bus can lock the whole system, while a GPU crash would still allow the kernel/network environment to function. Anyway, <2k resolution and normal AGP mode (1x, although the system advertises 4x as maximum) at least makes the system rock solid.
