With Ubuntu upgrades, you get what is delivered. But as it happens about an hour after I read your reply we got an update to Firefox, but I have to report that this morning the same problem recurred, so it doesn't seem to have been fixed in the new version.
Another thing I've noticed, which may or may not be connected is that sometimes when you start firefox up successfully, the facility to pick answers from a dropdown list is not present. So you have to close it and reload to get that working.
