Tried new kernel and xorg as requested. Some unusual new startup messages, such as "no compatible bridge window for [mem 0xffff0000-0xffffffff pref] and some garbage at the top of the screen during mode switching. X starts up okay, but in low-graphics mode. Since then I haven't been able to produce the crash, but of course I also don't have hardware acceleration or compiz. Although there's no crash, I'm including the information you've requested anyway. Please let me know if there's anything else I can do to help.
