I have a similar issue with 10.04, ATI 4670 OSS drivers: while using Google 
Earth, screen first turns black, then white with vertical black lines. Had to 
power-cycle the machine to get out of this state.
System: Asus P7P55D-E, i5-750, HIS ATI 4670 iceQ, Lucid 64bit, Google Earth 
5.1.x
