@Sebastian: yes, it does help. Open the file ~/.local/share/applications/mimeapps.list in an editor:
gedit ~/.local/share/applications/mimeapps.list Remove the last line that says "inode/directory=shotwell.desktop;" and save it. I'm not sure how that got in there but it's the source of the problem. Then, if you can re-install Shotwell from the PPA, check that file again to make sure this line did not re-appear and report here whether it now works, that would be great.
