Thanks for the suggestion.

I have given up.  I put the laptop in the basement and use it as a "test" 
machine doing nightly regression testing and a disk server.  That way it can 
make all the noise it wants.  I suppose I should re-install Windows on it, 
that is probably the ultimate solution.  What a waste of money -- oh well.
