Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: update-manager

While upgrading from kubuntu 6.10 to 7.04 Beta, I followed instructions
found at

https://wiki.kubuntu.org/KubuntuDistUpgrade

The process was quite straightforward, it gave just one error on dpkg,
that I couldn't identify.

I don't know if that error is the source of the "bug", anyway I
restarted my system and it could boot neither in standard mode nor in
recovery mode. The reason was "kernel panic" originated from "Cannot
open root device hda5 or unknown block (0,0) - Please append a correct
"root" boot option.

I restarted the system using a boot cd, and mounted my disks. I found that
under /boot the file initrd.img-xxxxxx
had today's time and date but it was a 0 byte file. Moreover all other files
(vmzlinuz, config) were those of the older kernel (2.6.17-10). Finally, there
was a initrd.img-2.6.17-10-generic.dpkg-bak file with same time and date as
initrd.img-2.6.17-10-generic

Using chroot + apt-get I was able to install, from the boot cd, the new
kernel 2.6.20-13 on my boot partition, and now everything works fine.

I also noticed that during the upgrade procedure, a message claiming the
removal of the old kernel packages.

Therefore, I suppose there is a bug in updating the kernel version. I
would suggest for some time, to install new kernel packages without
removing older ones, so as to leave a correctly installed kernel in the
grub/lilo menu.
