To my opinion it is not a Cups problem. It is probably an Ubuntu
problem.
I installed Epson Stylus S20 through Cups to a Greek USB version of
Puppy Linux (Puppel) and it worked.
The only thing that solves the problem is going back to gutenprint-5.2.4
the way it is descibed in:
