Now the restricted Driver's Manager detects that I need propriety
software, but when it installs the driver X will not restart.

Judging by the output my card may need the legacy driver. I have
attached the whole X log file too:

(WW) warning, (EE) error, (NI) not implemented, (??) unknown.
(II) Loading extension MIT-SCREEN-SAVER
(WW) The directory "/usr/share/fonts/X11/cyrillic" does not exist.
(WW) NVIDIA(0): The NVIDIA GeForce4 Ti 4200 with AGP8X GPU installed in this
(WW) NVIDIA(0): system is supported through the NVIDIA 1.0-96xx Legacy
(WW) NVIDIA(0): drivers. Please visit
(WW) NVIDIA(0): http://www.nvidia.com/object/unix.html for more
(WW) NVIDIA(0): information. The 1.0-9755 NVIDIA driver will ignore this
(WW) NVIDIA(0): GPU. Continuing probe...
(EE) No devices detected.
