I also have an old sblive and this problem does not only occur when upgrading
to dapper
I have the last few days been upgrading from breezy->dapper dapper->edgy and
edgy-feisty

In all of these steps I encountered that the installation changes the
card-ID, the easiest workaround is shown in this article:

http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=392865&highlight=default+sound+card

This does not clean upp the mess of the upgrade process but the guide in the
following link:
http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=205449&highlight=setting+default+sound+card
does clean out all of the misstakes. Im running kde right now and the gdm and
ubuntu-desktop was always removed with the linux-sound-base packages.

Since I experienced the problem on all the updates since breezy I
thought that you may have use of this information.

I wish you good luck in fixing the problem and thank you for the
excellent work on making ubuntu.
