I see this as well every few days on a laptop I administer. The
workaround from Planet Ubuntu has to be used to get things working
again. I am going to mark this Confirmed since the reporter provided the
screenshots and the Planet Ubuntu article at
http://en.andregondim.eti.br/?p=160 describes and displays the problem
perfectly.

I also am going to up the priority since in a normal default desktop
install, the average user will no longer be able to logout without
having to use the power button, which could conceivably cause loss of
data. I will start with Medium, but this is a major usability issue and
could probably easily go to High.
