I'm a bit confused.  I understand the frustration, but what is it
exactly that we need to "fix"?  A mistake can be made in plenty of
system files that lead to an unbootable system, which is why they are
owned by root...it is assumed that anyone with root access and editing
these files knows the consequences of making mistakes.
