I'd just like to add that this is inconsistent with Windows Vista and OS X behavior. Not that Ubuntu should copy them necessarily, but that there's a good chance that new users will expect this behavior. Also, from a usability standpoint I think it's more intuitive and consistent with other aspects of Ubuntu -- users are already accustomed to needing press a key or click in order to unlock the machine when its been idle, and suspend is often done after an extended idle period. Being able to click or press a key to wake the machine could (in a good way) trick the user into not realizing the machine ever went to sleep, seamlessly.
