A later version of the kernel is unlikely to stop this message appearing; the source code looks similar. The message can appear for various reasons. See the `defaults' label at the end of sd_read_cache_type() in http://lxr.linux.no/#linux+v2.6.34.1/drivers/scsi/sd.c#L1783. If none of the other messages in that function appear before it, then, from a quick skim, it looks like skip_ms_page_8 is set for the device.
