I am having a similar problem, although sometimes it works (rather randomly), but *always* the modem driver crashes when opening either "rhythmbox" or "brasero". My guess is some bug/incompatibility with udisk/upower
Here is the workaround I successfully use at the moment: .) boot with the modem unplugged .) then run the commands sudo killall udisks-daemon sudo killall upowerd sudo service network-manager stop sudo modprobe option then plug in the modem and wait for it to settle Use the program "wvdial" from the commandline to connect to the internet manually. By the way, this serious regression (and imho release-critical bug) has been present since Ubuntu 9.10!!! (Everything use to work fine in 9.04.) Cheers, Daniel PS: Here is what dmesg spits out after starting rhythmbox in those rare cases where connecting went fine and my workaround wasn't initially necessary: [ 134.046274] USB Serial support registered for GSM modem (1-port) [ 134.046448] usbcore: registered new interface driver option [ 134.046451] option: v0.7.2:USB Driver for GSM modems [ 222.510012] usb 6-2: new full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 3 [ 222.676152] usb 6-2: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice [ 223.540037] usb 6-2: USB disconnect, address 3 [ 223.704703] Initializing USB Mass Storage driver...
