I got the same error trying to use an ext3 partition from an old
Iomega 40GB disk (external USB).  Different stack trace, though.  

This was the first time I tried to use the disk under Karmic.  There
may well be a problem with the disk, though it seemed to work okay
under Jaunty.  I've attached excerpts from /var/log/syslog, including
the stack trace.
