Same Problem with me: Acer 1692 ATI radeon x700 newest ubuntu/kernel, doesnt resume after suspend. With nomodeset option graphic modus doesnt even boot and i only get terminal-modus. Friend of mine has the same Problem with the x700, nomodeset doesnt change anything with his computer.
