here's uname...

The process was:
* I was running 8.04 and was fully up to date.  The SouthBridge controller 
could mount drives.
* I ran an in-place update to 10.04.  The SouthBridge controller is seen by the 
system, but it will not create a /dev/sdX let alone mount any drive.
* I am unsure of any command to run because the drives are simply not seen.
* I have tried "Disk Utility" "GParted" "hdparm" and a few others.

It seems to me I would need a command that probed the controller itself,
not one that tries to probe drives.

I have an ASUS P5AD2-E motherboard.
