The installer just aborted due to a disk error, so I had to restart.
This time, I clicked "Change" in the partition editor and selected the
"format" check box in the dialog box the displayed. This way, I can
check all partitions. Checking the boxes in the table worked, too, this
time.

Maybe the difference is that, this time, the partitions were already
present (from my previous attempt). Hence, it might be that the check
box cannot be checked whenever the partition has only just been created.
The more proper thing would be that it cannot be unchecked in this case.
