Later versions of Ubuntu have since resolved most of the difficulties reported with this bug report. That is, I can change resolutions to one most appropriate for both my monitor and eye-sight. The only remaining issue is that the available ratios distort the appearance of letters, etc. However, rather than be nit-picking, I'd rather accept the monster improvements that have thusfar been provided and close this bug report. Many thanks to all involved in making Ubuntu the powerhouse it has become.
