Hello Bogdan, Sorry for the long delay in responding, but the T42 'lives' a long way away. I had a very brief opportunity to fix the problem so I decided to upgrade the machine from 9.10 to 10.04.
This 'fixed' the problem and Stellarium now works perfectly on the machine, so the problem can be closed, from my standpoint. Thank you very much for all your work on this problem.
