This or a similar error occured to me too. The networkconnection was bad, and the update didn't finisch, due to external reasons.
So I was forced to stop it manually, and now I repeatedly get this error.
LANG=C sudo apt-get update Hit http://de.archive.ubuntu.com karmic Release.gpg Hit http://de.archive.ubuntu.com karmic-updates Release.gpg Hit http://de.archive.ubuntu.com karmic-security Release.gpg Hit http://de.archive.ubuntu.com karmic Release ... Hit http://de.archive.ubuntu.com karmic-security/universe Sources Reading package lists... Error! E: Read error - read (5: Input/output error) E: The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.
Why am I not told, whether the status file or the package list could not be parsed. Is this a kind of a quizzle? Modifying the sources.list - masking the last line - gives the same error one line earlier, therefore I guess the error isn't in the last reportet, but the first unreported line. I did what Mark Rijckenberg suggested on 2009-04-06 here https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/update-manager/+question/66668 (cp status.old, rm -rf /var/lib/apt/lists/*, ...) with no success. /etc/apt/sources.list looks well. -- E:Read error - read (5 Input/output error), E:The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/386891 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
